FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 3: "Factors of Livability"
Uploaded on 2016-11-14 by Aurore Delory
I have not been to North America and Australia/New Zealand which seems to be good place to live, so I will focus more on Europe which I know better. 1) Munich, Germany : amazing I lived there I want to go back 2) Zurich, Switzerland : and most of the cities in Switzerland anyway (Lausanne, Geneva...) 3) Aachen, Germany 4) Lyon, France : not too big, well located, 5) Barcelona, Spain Doha and Moscow are not in my top list but I lived there and these cities are nice place as well with a few developments could reach a good place. The main factors for me are: 1) Safety: Doha was a very good example, I felt very safe there 2) The size: not too big (Paris and London are much too big), not far from nature, human scale 3) Public transport / infrastructure: you can easily move within and outside the city 4) Pollution: Cairo, China, and even some european cities are too polluted (mainly air pollution, but noise pollution as well and waste, a clean city) 5) Avalability of jobs / entertainment / parks I don't live in a big city right now but I live near Birmingham, UK. For each of the factor I rate as follow. Very good / Good / Fair / Poor / Very poor. As you can see in the picture, near the brand new main station, there is more cars than anything else (pedestrian, bikes, bus...) 1) Good. Feels relatively safe 2) Good. Size is right at the limit, should not be bigger but OK, you can walk almost everywhere in the city centre, but it takes quite a long time to go to a nice place like a national park 3) Poor. No Underground for a 1 million inhabitants, tram just opened, bus extremly expensive, no bike to rent, no high speed train reaching the city, a lot of the trains not yet electrified. Flight connection OK. 4) Fair. Pollution is acceptable but could be reduced, less cars in the city, electric trains instead of diesel 5) Fair. Job is OK and will improve with the high speed train coming. Entertainment a lot based on shopping but generally OK. Missing parks near the city centre. So for me the major axis of development for Birmingham is transportation within and outside the city. And as part of the redevelopment of the city centre, a park should have been included.
