In my city Rawalpindi, the Heat Island effect over the last few years has been ranging form 1-5 Degree celsius. Heatwave intensity and frequency are predicted to intensify in the coming years and this will bear adverse consequences to the socio-economic fabric of urbanized areas. Urban areas are dominated by built surfaces that increase heat storage and reduce water retention capacity. The adjoining rural areas experience a 2-3 degree drop in temperature during nights while in day, this difference is negligible. Photo has been taken from www.samaa.tv.
