1.Check the temperature differences in US cities. - New York +20°. Washington D.C +21°. Las Vegas +24°. Seattle +17°. Boston +15° 2.Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? Medellín- Colombia - First image: The city center - Avenida Oriental (most important street in the center) ![Medellin - Avenida oriental][1] http://www.archdaily.co/co/785631/avanza-construccion-de-nuevo-corredor-verde-en-medellin - Second image: a house in the surrounding rural area (oriente antioqueño) ![Casa en La Ceja (oriente antioqueño)][2] http://www.orienteraiz.co/blog/feria-de-las-flores-en-antioquia-y-otras-tradiciones-que-unen-a-los-antioquenos/ Medellin is located in a valley, half an hour from the countryside that surrounds it. It is a city that has been increasing its urban temperature because they are filling cement the few green areas and parks we have, build new streets thinking more vehicles than pedestrians, cutting down large numbers of trees that provide shade and oxygen the city. It has also been uncontrollably increasing the number of vehicles on the streets, reaching an approximate figure of 2 million vehicles simultaneously in the city, counting public and private transport, increasing the use of energy and thus the temperature. The temperature difference between the city and its surrounding rural areas is between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, while the city has increased its temperature compared to previous years due to these effects. 3.Which are the measures you would propose? If I had the opportunity to propose measures to reduce the effects of urban heat island would increase by lot of green areas, parks and open spaces of the city that are now so scarce, and try to integrate these public areas with residential areas and commercial to create meeting points and socialization that people leave their homes or offices and can easily enjoy these spaces. Sow trees that create shade in the main streets of the city, especially downtown, and would control over the number of vehicles in use in the city, restricting vehicle access in downtown areas to be enjoyed more pedestrians and use incentive public transport. 4.Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? the UHI effect is a relatively new term in the city, so there is still no policies to help reduce it, however there are new sustainable buildings that encourage the use of green techniques to reduce the use of air conditioning, proper guidance and implementation buildings, reuse of rainwater, etc. [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14788986472649421.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14788989449825055.jpg
