I have chosen to look at three stocks and flows in the city of Melbourne. Water, Energy, and People. Water- Australia is a sun burnt land and water is of always great consequence to our city's development. Melbourne's Water stock has leveled out in recent years between 65% and 80% depending on the season, you can see in Figures 1&2 that in the summer of 2009 during the end of a series of back to back droughts, Water stocks got as low as 25% across all catchments. This has lead to the construction of two water treatment facilities to re purpose the flow of the cities grey water. Along with kinder winter rains it has lead to refilling of Melbourne's catchments. This is vital as one third of Melbourne's water supply is used to sustain Melbourne's coal power plants. Energy- 125 Billion liters of water are used per annum at Melbourne major coal power plants each year. More than 1/3 of Melbourne's total water consumption. Water flows into energy where 1.31 Mega Liters equals 1 gigawatt hour. As seen in Figure 3 this coal power produces 73% of the cities total power consumption. However as the stocks of fossil fuels runs short we are encouraged to look at clean alternatives. And with a country that is so sun-kissed Solar Energy has the potential for great things. People- Regarded as a vastly Multicultural city Melbourne is constantly growing. It's population is predicted to be 5.2 million. This peaks out at a growth rate of 1400 people per week since 2012. This constant flow of people into the city is amazing to consider where these people are coming from. With 38% of the inhabitants being born outside of Australia. Melbourne is home to largest Greek and Italian citys outside of their homeland. Highlighting the flow into the city.
