The image was shot at the very busy Ongpin Street in Chinatown at the Binondo District, Manila, Philippines. The Chinatown in Manila is the oldest in the world. Dependence on electricity and utility (telephone) infrastructure is emphasized in the image, as countless number of wires, old and new, forms what we usually refer to as ‘spaghetti’ of wires. As the area continues to develop and even densify, so does the increase in demand and capacity for electricity and utility services – such as telephone and internet services. New high-rise buildings are built in place of old shop house/warehouse buildings. If improvements were carried out, utility companies just leave the old cables and add-on the new wires to the existing.
