Isfahan is a much greener city that what I imagined before I visited this year. Obviously water infrastructure is a key in this kind of country and I was impressed by the system of irrigation within the city. Trees are growing within gutters which are flooded from time to time. There may be some pumps but this is essentially gravity based, going through pipes through the crossing roads and pedestrian crossing go above with grids or other smart idea. This is probably more sustainable than going with a water truck all over the city to bring water to the plants as we do in Europe. Obviously it requires good planning and some water may be lost through evaporation, but at the end of the day, the shadow from the trees, the big proportion of green improves the liveability of the city. The point is to say that sustainable does not necessarily mean extremly modern or high tech infrastructure system, but sometimes using old ideas that proved efficient.
