MODULE 07: STOCKS AND FLOWS EXERCISE 02: In the previous videos, the concept of "stocks and flows" was introduced and many examples were presented, in order for you to better understand it. Now, we would like to make you implement this knowledge, based on your personal experience and judgment. This exercise consists of three parts: 1.First, identify the most important stocks and flows (at least three) entering, staying in and eventually leaving your area (or city). The most important stocks and flows in my city are certainly information, capitals, people, water and finally products. 2.Describe your findings based on the concept of stocks and flows by presenting the necessary information or examples. According to the P.D.A.U. (the main urban planning instrument in Algeria) Tizi-Ouzou is an economic, commercial, and administrative hub, so the principal stocks are information and capitals. Information is stocked in libraries, archive centers of various administrations, for example those of the university, the justice, the civil state ...etc. Capitals are stocked in two main centers; the banks and the state treasury. Obviously, these stocks turn into flows when distributed, but the most important flows in my city are people and water. In 1974 Tizi-Ouzou is raised as regional capital, the city have been extended to the south with the construction of the university and a residential area called "la nouvelle ville" (the new town) today the university accounts more than 42 739 students (statistics of 2007) coming from different villages and cities of the region, the majority of them complete their studies and leave the city, also lots of people comes to the city each day for administrative purposes or business. so all of these persons constitute an important flow. The water's flow is important too, because it doesn't concern only the supply of the city but also the water transfer pipe coming from the dam called "Taksebt" it is a huge project that aims to supply the capital (Algiers) with drinking water. 3.Imagine and shortly describe how these stocks and flows could change in the future for the benefit of your area. first, I think expanding the use of the computer network in the administration and access to information through the internet will be benefic for my city, also the developing of e-banking and credit card use. this can decongest the city that suffers from the narrowness of the streets because of the topography of the site, and alleviate the pressure on it . All this, on the other hand, will improve the daily life of the population. Then, The flow of people decreases remarkably in summer because of holidays and the closure of the university, giving Tizi-Ouzou the appearance of a ghost town. I believe that activities that generate a flow of people should be organized in this period to ensure a boost to the economy of the city throughout the year. finally, water from the dam should be equitably distributed, because some areas of the city still suffer from water supply irregularity while huge amounts of water pass-through the city to supply the capital.
