2.1 Abu Dhabi is located in a coastal Hot and Dry region so it is believed that cities here have the possibility to act as daily urban cool islands (UCI). However, there are studies that show that the temperature of Land Surface increases in the Downtown area compared to the outskirts of the city (that are developed). The main effects of an increase in temperature is found in districts with open high or mid-rise buildings (mixed commercial and residential). The roads are wider in such districts as they account for major thoroughfare. The setbacks of high rises increase hence the surrounding streets are also wider. There is also very less greenery in such areas. 2.3 Increase in vegetation Minimize building footprint Hardscape with more permeable and porous materials Implement sensible use of glazed surfaces and apt shading devices instead of full glazed facade 2.4 Yes and there are steps taken by the council in the planning stage to ensure that buildings blocks are aligned in order to ensure shading and reduce exposure to direct sunlight. Due to the presence of the Masdar institute near the city, there has been an increased sensitivity towards policy making in regards with sustainability.
