I worked on a construction site in Worcester, South Africa, where a bulk water pipeline was being constructed from cast iron pipes made in China. Even though South Africa is one of the largest producers of iron ore it does not presently have any smelters making cast iron pipes and only produce from 10% of the iron ore mined. Why do we then still design solutions made from products, such as cast iron, that one cannot produce in South Africa.
