This image is a photograph of a sunken highway in Mexico City and is a clear example of how our dependency on infrastructure is visible on the urban and territorial scale. After all, as modern day cities have grown reliant on the car for transportation, car oriented infrastructure like highways, roads, and parkinglots have come to dominate and split our landscapes. In the case of highways such as this one, entire communities can be split in half, walkability is thrown out the window, and noise and air pollution fill the scene. Therefore, if we want to design better, more sustainable, and more human cities, we have to accommodate city design to meet the real needs of people, instead of accommodating ourselves around our cars.
