FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 3: "Factors of Livability"
Uploaded on 2020-08-29 by Naveen Ali
1. Five most livable cities: Vienna (Austria), Zurich (Switzerland), Vancouver (Canada), Copenhagen (Denmark), Amsterdam (Netherlands) 2. Factors that lead to livable cities are: access to affordable and diverse housing that are linked to public transportation, infrastructure that supports both pedestrian and vehicular requirements, education, health and community services, local shops, vibrant public spaces, and entertainment. Residents also need to feel safe, secure and connected to the community, culture and physical environment of the city. Reclaiming streets has an important impact as the streets play a role in moving people, forming social spaces and becoming a part of the city’s environmental infrastructure. By designing streets suited to the local culture and physical environment, it is possible to make transit faster and more efficient, walking safer and public life more enjoyable. Building and maintaining infrastructure is also crucial as it is expensive but if smart investments are made, it will increase economic vitality and livability of a city several times over. 3. I live in Dubai which is effectively quite a livable city. It houses people of diverse nationalities, religions and income levels. It can however find more ways of developing its future infrastructure to cater more to the pedestrians.
