The uploaded photo is from my apartment in Thane, India. The visible information includes the hills, buildings, infrastructure and the streets. Firstly, one can visibly identify two different housing solutions, one are the formal high-rises and other are informal slum like settlements. The invisible information is the infrastructure available to these two areas. The roads connecting to the high rises are wide, clean and maintained. The high-rises are also easily accessible from the main roads, whereas, the informal settlements are placed away from the main road; one has to take meandering narrow lanes to reach these settlements. Second invisible information is the construction materials used. On one hand the formal settlements are made out of concrete, brick and mortar; made to last as long as possible. Whereas, the informal structures are made using cheaper materials, with roofs made from aluminum sheets which are covered with tarpaulin to avoid leakage during the monsoon season.
