I have identified three stocks and flows in relation to Thane, India. 1.People – There are three different kinds of flow of people to the city. a) People immigrating to the city from small towns and staying back for good. b) Contract wage earners, usually young males from villages coming into the city during the non-agricultural season and working on construction projects. c) People travelling daily to the city from the nearby cities and towns. 2.Food Supplies – For any settlement food is important. Thane is a large metro city without single farmland or plantation. All food items are bought into the city from outside. During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown food supply chains were realized as a crucial element to the economy. In the future the city should focus on development of urban farming systems. 3.Consumer goods and their waste – With the ever-growing e-commerce industry more consumers are buying goods online rather than in person. People here are also a huge contributor to this; ever so more now as they are under lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic. But the packaging of these products creates a lot of waste which accumulates in the landfills.
