The amount of food waste in North America is very high. A neighbouring town recently did a very small study that monitored food waste with positive results. Many people are experimenting with small gardens (shown in photo) now. And it’s also been a very dry season in Ontario, so farmers are concerned about much smaller harvests. I’d like to see this small study rolled out onto a larger scale. People could monitor what they’re throwing out and why. This should include spoilage, but also food left on plates and such. As a database is built, an easy website/app could be created based on the results of food that is most often discarded. How is their own gardening or food shortage impacting their choices and consumption and waste? What types of recipes or meals could be created using these ingredients, either for direct consumption or future use? Provide easy solutions other than waste. Measuring things makes people more aware. All of this could help city planners determine how best to deal with food waste: compost and biofuel, for example, would be superior to landfill. It has to be easy enough to extend to those living in condos.
