This photo was taken last summer during a trip to Hong Kong. The use of bamboo as scaffolding fascinated me for several reasons. First, as someone with experience on standard steel scaffolding, I was amazed that the material was strong enough to support people working on great heights. Second, the juxtaposition of a traditional and natural material being used in a highly industrialized and advanced society was both intriguing and encouraging. Of course, bamboo is abundant and readily available in Asia, so its use as scaffolding makes great economic sense. Hopefully its use will evolve and become more of a primary building material, rather than just a supportive material as shown here.
