I'm able to find all four ecosystem services within walking distance of my home. The photo shows a working farm with market area (to the right). The perimeter of the farm is forested. To the left is a residential neighbourhood. Provisioning Raw materials can be gathered from the forested areas. However, the main provisioning here is prime farmland. This particular farm grows everything from apples and strawberries, to asparagus, corn, and pumpkins. Regulating The forests do a great job of carbon sequestration. There are also bioswales along the road for natural storm water management. Pollination is a regular occurrence on the farm, the forest, and in the neighbourhood gardens. Habitat It's not uncommon to see deer grazing in the fields, as well as smaller animals like rabbits, raccoons, and bats. The area is also part of a bird migratory route. Cultural Services There's a recreation trail with year-round maintenance that connects the residential area to forest trails. It's a well-used walking and cycling route. The farm also has seasonal events, like an apple festival and haunted hay maze, which draw people to the area. If you walk far enough, you can enjoy "forest bathing".
