To undertake the idea of stocks and flows, I would like to bring forth the idea of food production, its consumption, the waste and re-cycling process. The entire cycle has various examples of stocks which convert into flows and sometimes the converted product is another stock. Here are four major aspects to appreciate - 1. Land and the food which is grown is a stock at local level in terms of quantity as well as diversity. 2. The produce is transported to markets and from there, vendors as well as individuals buy it in varying quantities. The produce has now entered the category of flow. 3. Individuals cook and consume the food. Energy is invested in cooking. The food further converts into nutrients and waste which is another flow. On a deeper level the generated waste is consumed by bacteria and caters to another microscopic flow cycle. 4. The component of waste is recycled into products of value which goes back to the market as another stock. Above mentioned pointers categorically show a chain of events which has various levels of stocks and flows in play. Either simultaneously or consecutively.
