Toronto, Canada Water: The city has only one source of drinking water, the magnificent Lake Ontario which is part of the Great Lakes and contains over 20% of the fresh water of the planet. There are 4 water treatment plants. Immigration: One of the main characteristics of Toronto is its great cultural diversity. Immigration is important for the country’s economy and for several years Toronto has been the home of largest number of recent immigrants of any Canadian city. In 2016, Toronto was home of 17.5% of all recent immigrants while the city only has 7.8% of the country’s population. Construction materials: Toronto has experienced the largest amount of construction activity of any city in Canada. The constructions materials used the new residential, office, industrial and commercial developments are brought from all over the world and this constant flow is changing the skyline of the city in a fast pace. This factors are shaping this city as a major economic driver of the country but at the same time is having an effect in housing affordability, energy consumption, carbon emissions and increase gentrification trend that is expelling low income people from the city.
