The picture I have taken is from a busy street in Chennai, India. The visible information which can be seen in this picture is the garbage on the streets (leading to poor hygiene) and the absence of a segregated pedestrian path. Adequate streetlights aren’t provided and the street is illuminated only by lights from the surrounding shops. Coming to the invisible information, we can talk about Chennai’s climate. During summers, the hot and humid climate causes discomfort which is worsened by improper crowd management and the number of vehicles entering this narrow street. Being a mud road with no proper drainage, the road becomes wet during rains, causing discomfort while walking and impeding pedestrian movement. All this information must be considered by designers to provide urban design strategies for overcoming all the negatives present in the existing design to make it livable and joyful. In this street, solutions like restricting it to only pedestrians and bikes can be incorporated. Segregating circulation by providing footpaths and driveways is another solution. This long street also has very few garbage bins. Designers must provide isolated spaces for the same at regular intervals which do not hinder movement or become health hazards.
