There were limited kind of building materials and limited construction techniques used in Turkey. The materials, construction techniques used and formation of building plans were dependent on the natural climatic features (climate, sunlight and topography). Depending on the region, the construction technique was either masonry using natural stones like limestone or hybrid systems involving the use of wood, adobe brick and stone. Timber was not only used in structure but also used in windows and doors. The natural stone industry in Turkey mainly consists of producing marble, granite, limestone, travertine, serpentine, diabase and slate stone which are sourced from natural stone reserves spread across the country. There is a stark contrast seen between the old building (ITU Faculty of Architecture) in the foreground and new in the background which shows the use of advanced construction processes and materials as well as a shift from the local traditional practices. In the new building (Ritz Carlton hotel) - Use of curtain walls with aluminum framing members and glass infills shows components of a globalized economy. Shift from thick masonry walls with small windows to light, glass facades.
