Every settlement has a canopy-layer urban heat island (UHI), from small villages to big cities. You too could measure the UHI magnitude of your city! Some preparation is needed before you are able to carry out the measurements. Prepare yourself by answering the following questions: Where would you measure the maximum UHI intensity? (Hint: two locations are needed) When (at what time of the day) is the UHI intensity at its maximum? How should you set-up the sensor? Check your answers with the provided answer sheet on this webpage. Make sure you follow the correct answers before you start your measurements. Equipment This exercise requires temperature data which you may be able to collect yourself or obtain from a third party: Your smartphone may have built-in hardware to measure temperature. You can buy an external sensor which can be connected to your smartphone. For an example check here: http://www.icelsius.com/ Alternatively, you can search for temperature data on the internet. Maybe the meteorological/climate service of your country/city has stations in suitable locations in your city for the proposed analysis. What do the measurements mean? It is time to start with the measurements. Consider the above questions before setting up your sensor
