FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2020-08-03 by Olivia Mihale
The area presented is a quieter part of Manchester. The photograph shows a series of apartment blocks as well as a supermarket and an entertainment complex. There is also a paid parking-lot and a small green area slightly populated on the right. There is no traffic on the street. The overall image presents a friendly, medium-density neighborhood. However, from the 3 high-rise in the image, as well as the multiple cranes in the background, one can infer that the city is expanding its urban fabric. Considering the possible typologies of the buildings (either residential or office developments) it is obvious that Manchester's economy is growing, hence the city expects an incoming flow of residents, attracted by its (probable) increase in jobs (1st invisible information). Moreover, the lack of people on the street and the small number of cars parked are signs of a less central area of Manchester (2nd invisible information). The 1st "invisible" information can be used to inform the design of a decentralized urban system by dispersing the building of residential blocks in only different areas of the city. It can also be used to improve the transportation infrastructure as well as to implement a cycling-to-work scheme.
