In Canada, oil products are the dominant fuel source and cause of C02 emissions. "transportation" is responsible for approximately half of that consumption. Natural gas and electricity are second and third, the two combined having marginally higher consumption than oil products. More than half of the gas and electricity goes to “other” (residential and commerce/public services), with another notable portion sent to “industry”. Transportation is highly dependent on oil (90%). The first big shift must focus here. Greater incentives should be given to consumers for electric vehicles. Give public transportation and fleets a set period of time to upgrade to clean vehicles. Many cities and larger companies are starting to do this on their own. Connect more traffic and street lights and signs to solar. Incentivize industry to capture and reuse waste heat, scrapped materials, etc. for energy generation. Fine the oil industry for their C02 emissions and reward green energy companies. Green roofs are already required in many major cities. Several vertical forests are under construction in the GTA. Both help lower heat island effect, reduce C02, and lower heating/cooling costs. New by-laws should mandate renewable energy generation: solar, wind, biofuels/waste. Apply this to both new and retrofit buildings
