FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2020-08-01 by RIK MAJUMDAR
Visible Information: Long pedestrian zebra crossing on the busy street junction. Various people can be seen crossing the street on foot. In the hot climate people can be seen carrying umbrellas or simply using their arm to shield their head from the harsh sun light. Heavy vehicular movement can be seen at the street junction. A historic building is across the street and behind that a high-rise structure can be seen still under construction. Invisible information: I) The pedestrian crossing is too long to be covered on foot against the movement of heavy traffic. II) Lack of systematic street shading except for existing trees cause discomfort to pedestrians. Knowledge from invisible information: The fairly long pedestrian crossing on the wide busy street junction causes interference between heavy vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement. This observation gives valuable knowledge and various methods could be explored to find solution for such problems which could be used for planning future urban spaces that are safer and more efficient. For example, wherever busy street junctions are formed in a city, pedestrian crossings for such junctions could be segregated from vehicular traffic by either providing foot-over bridges or underground subways to create uninterrupted, safer urban mobility.
