The lake is formed by the dammed waters of the Paranoá River. It has 48 square kilometers of area, and about eighty kilometers of perimeter, with some artificial beaches, such as "Prainha" and "Piscinão do Lago Norte". The presence of the lake is then justified as an aesthetic and leisure factor. Its construction was designed to increase air humidity, decrease local temperature and establish a source of leisure for Brasilians.
