This photo was taken in "Janata Iron Market" in Dhaka while I was surveying for the feasibility study of a new urban market in the site. This building was built in the 1930's and is one of the oldest in the area. This itself is a building based on RCC structure with iron bars were used as reinforcement. In that time period, there were no cement industry in the area as well. So, both the materials were results of global economy of that time. In present time, this practice has only grown with time. This very market sells over 80% of Dhaka's building materials that are any kind of metal. Iron bars, stainless steel bars, aluminum sheets all are sold here. As we all know, Bangladesh does not have any natural source of metal nor any metal purification factory. So, almost all the buildings made in Dhaka or any other big city or even semi-urban places in Bangladesh are subjected to globalized economy when it comes to materials.
