1. National circumstances of Italy - Population: 60.2 millions - Land use: in the last two decades, increase of forested, grassland and settlement areas, reduction of cropland area. - Climate: temperate mediterranean climate influenced by the sea; alpine climate in great part of the North. - Economics: major advanced mixed economy, highly developed and export-oriented. - Energy consumption: still largely based on non-renewable soruces; target of 17% of energy consumption of renewable sources by the end of 2020; nuclear power banned since 1987. - Industry: highly industrialized country, diversified and developed industrial sector. - Transport: modern and well developed transportation systems at each scale, private cars still the most used in many cases. 2. Main climate protection targets: referring to regional, national and European standards and protocols; reduction of polluting emissions in all productive sectors; improvement of air quality mostly in some regions in the North; protection of sea coasts in some specific parts of the country. 3. Strategies: implementation of existing programs and incentives on the adoption of specific plans at both public and private levels. 4. I generally agree with the country's policies in favour of environmental protection. I would enhance approaches regarding public transportation implementations.
