This house (pictured) is typically of houses constructed that were in Queensland Australia during the mid 1900s. Sometimes called a Queenslander house, these houses are made of hardwood (when such timber was abundant) and with an open environment to let the outside air blow through the house. It's typifies that time of localized activity. However these days, the local builders has so many options to add to the house including hard plastic verandas, solar panels, insulation panels, gazebo tents and so on. As well, the fixtures and fittings for this house are of many designs and made from many materials representing the global nature of supply of building materials. after saying this, it should be noted that even this diverse set of options is likely a small percentage of the building options available worldwide to add to these houses. There is so much choice to make a house more sustainable.
