FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

The image was captured in a locality in New Delhi called 'Haji Colony'. The interesting aspect of this settlement is a functioning agricultural field right adjacent to the settlement. It is a small settlement constituent of mainly lower-middle or lower income group. The image shows two children flying kites standing at the edge of a boundary wall which encloses the agricultural field. The image shows a very indigenous and persistent problem in un-planned urban areas of Indian sub-continent i.e. Lack of open spaces for social interaction. Two major invisible aspects which can be derived from visible part of the image is the co-existence of rural-urban phenomenon and the use of open space amid a highly dense urban settlement. This co-existence does not only allow social interactions to some extent but also allows an ecological inter-dependence to sustain. Locally, the micro climate is effected positively and the vegetable produce is sold locally which promotes local economic cycles. And the use of open spaces for social interaction happens all around the edge of the boundary wall because of maximum availability of natural light and cross-ventilation. These local factors are invisible but highly functional.
