Reconstruction of the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Bus Terminal in Lagos. Answer 1 A covered bus terminal, high rise building, re-modification of an existing infrastructure, Terpaulin material cover and steel frame, skilled workers, and trees. Answer 2 i. The increasing demand for public transportation ii. Serving the urban central business district (CBD) There is an increasing demand for public transport in Lagos considering its large and fast growing population size in Nigeria. The construction of a new structure in an old bus terminal shows the city decision to utilize the centrality of the TBS area to serve the growing number of commuters between the Lagos Island areas and the Lagos mainland areas. In managing and servicing of the urban commercial centres or CBD with adequate public transport infrastructure is paramount in any city effort to reduce road traffic congestion and ease accessibility from residential to commercial centres, vice versa. It also has significant influence on the favourability of a location labeled as commercial over other locations. Answer 3 The knowledge that the public transport struggles to meet the daily demand of the urban inhabitants is very important in analyzing, assessing and understanding the likely factors that can threaten the sustainability of the city infrastructures. It will give an insight into the possible approach to use to manage and solve the situation. The re-construction of the bus terminal shows that the city administrators and stakeholders are aware of the challenges to be posed by an inadequate infrastructural system in meeting the city dwellers needs. This can act as an indicator of the future needs of the city inhabitants and the necessary infrastructure to manage the needs. The Terpaulin material been used can signify cost saving method of providing infrastructure on one hand and a short term construction plan on the other hand. Given the information from the public transport system, knowledge like mobility pattern, economic interaction, cost of rent for housing, urban dwellers welfare, public services, location accessibility and centrality, people physical and social interaction behaviour, among others can be better understood. In addition, having a more organized bus terminal as compared to the many illegal and non-designated bus stops used by most commercial vehicles, can redirect passengers and vehicular traffic away from other parts of the city to or through the TBS area. This is especially true for passengers who will prefer a more comfortable bus terminal where rain and the heat from sun will not inconvenience them when waiting for a bus. In this regard, it will also act as a place of social interaction where people can meet, wait and spend time with each other before parting ways to their various destinations.
