Ho Chi Minh city is major economic city of Vietnam. The photo is taken from my workplace Vo Trong Architects in District 3 Ho Chi Minh city. District 3 is commercial district of about 5 sq.km near city center. At first glance it looks like typical developed urban district from tropics. Mid rise development punctured with few high rises and dense greenery along the streets gives the sense of high quality living. But rapid urbanization and immediate need of infrastructure lead this city to few major issues of urban planning which are invisible in this picture. One of them is dense and improper distribution of land. Narrow sites lead to design of tube houses which lack in light and ventilation affecting the livability. Government policies for transportation encourage the increasing number of two wheeler motorbikes on streets. The information of transportation need of city and road network can be used to develop better policies. Also more sensible distribution of land can make city more livable and sustainable.
