FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2020-06-24 by Elisa Blanco
This photograph was taken as part of a study of Caracas’ nightlife in its public spaces. Visible elements are the type of public space (square/plaza), the materials and textures, the surrounding buildings, elements such as trees, bollards, lighting, decoration...; and related to the people/users: their characteristics, such as gender, age, etc. Invisible information: 1.the people's sense of safety. This is a key factor that influences the decision of citizens to go out at night. We can infer that they felt enough sense of safety to be there at night, which includes women and children, a positive indicator. Another invisible information is regarding transportation/mobility. We can infer that all the people pictured in the photograph found a way to get there and will have a way to return home. In Caracas, this has been an increasingly difficult issue, especially at night. Both of these informations must be taken into account for the design of better public spaces. We must consider the citizens’ input about what and how it can be improved in terms of safety, mobility, and other aspects, in order to support the decision-making process for urban planners and city managers and achieve a better and more livable city.
