I chose this particular picture of my pergola in my backyard. As per the topics of the This includes concrete with pebbles inside. This follows on from the discussion about the western method of construction using the materials such as concrete that are not necessarily natively found in regions such as Africa and Asia. I also ensured that I included in the picture the the support pillar for the pergola as well as the drainage pipe. The pillar is made from Aluminium - this could have been mined locally in Australia - however the raw bauxite was probably shipped internationally and refined into an Aluminium pillar/beam that could be cut down to various lengths. The PVC pipe is also manufactured either from ingredients that were sourced potentially sourced internationally. PVC itself as a material is widely used in the construction industry, and is made from fossil fuels. As a long term sustainable material, there is an immense amount of energy being used in extracting the raw materials, refining the PVC, usage in the built environment and the energy required to recycle and remake it into other forms.
