Sines, in Portugal, isn’t a really big city, if compared with other ones in the country, but it’s very interesting due to the particularity that it has to be very close to a heavily industrial area. In fact, close to it there’s a petrochemical industry (with the largest liquid bulk terminal in the country), a refinery (one of the largest in Europe and whose pipelines cross the urban area), a large growing container terminal and even a natural gas terminal. Being near the sea, the city has also always had a big connection with water (fishing or maritime transport jobs) and this relationship had an huge impact on the design of the coast with the creation of jetties (for mooring ships, controlling sand levels and configuring a peaceful bay) and an artificial platform to serve as container terminal. The photo shows this impact of water infrastructure and also transport. Just ahead, there’s the fish market with its jetty and boats. Next to it, a beach and a recreational boat terminal. And at the third plan, we can see the container terminal with its cranes and infrastructures and their huge impact on the urban landscape. This should seek sustainability in the future.
