This application aims to improve walkability in the city of Riyadh through the direct engagement between citizens and the planning authorities. It serves as a digital companion, allowing citizens to explore their city, make observations, and evaluate their experience. As they walk, the application records their route anonymously, and allows them to upload pictures of any positive or negative findings along the way. By the end of their walk, it asks them to rate the particular route they took by scoring certain criteria, including: safety, comfort, pedestrian paths, greenery, amenities, etc. The application then generates a “walkability index” for that route, and notifies the planning authorities of any aspects that require action. The collective data from all “walkers” is combined into an interactive city map, which allows citizens to benefit from each other’s insights, and connects them to neighbourhood initiatives such as planting, cleaning up or walking for a cause.
