1. Flow - water. A critical flow in Manchester for power and transport (photograph: Manchester Ship Canal). It remains important for drinking and hygiene. 2. Stock - housing. Greater Manchester's 3 million population spread out across the conurbation need homes to live in 3. Flow - commuters. Greater Manchester has far more jobs in the city centre than any other part of the city, requiring tens of thousands of people to commute from the outlying boroughs into the centre. Changes in the future: 1. While there is no immediate threat to water, climate change and the lack of a national water network are both concerns, as is the risk of flooding. 2. Housing. Bitter battles are being fought over where new homes should be built - whether on "Green Belt" protected land, on brownfield sites or not at all. 3. Commuting. Especially coming out of the current Coronavirus lockdown both the flow of commuters and the transport types may change. More people may work from home, there may be higher unemployment and more may drive, cycle or walk as everyone avoids public transport.
