To the north of Kyiv there are vast water reservoirs (part of the Dnieper river) and forests surrounding the water bodies. Among the services this ecosystem provides are: 1. Provisioning: food from fishing, raw materials such as wood or sand, power coming from the hydroelectric dams on the river, and potentially medicinal services. 2. Regulating: water bodies and forests help to regulate the air quality and temperature (especially cooling, humidifying, and purifying the air during the summer). Also, forests help to regulate the distribution of precipitation, which helps to avoid/mitigate floods and soil erosion due to heavy rains and melting of snow (if the winter is very snowy). 3. Habitat or supporting services: especially in the reservation areas this ecosystem provides habitat for plants and animals and helps to maintain genetic diversity. 4. Cultural services: river and forests are a perfect get-away to recharge, rest mentally from the city, re-connect with nature and get exercise with long walks, runs or bicycle tours outside of the city.
