The dominant fossil fuels used in Ukraine are coal, oil/oil products, and gas, where oil is used slightly less than coal and gas each. The most energy is consumed by the “other” category, where the largest part is residential, followed by commerce and agricultural sectors. According to the diagram, among fossil fuels gas is used the most for this category, followed by coal and gas by lesser extent. The other two categories are transport and industry. Ukraine produces quite a bit of nuclear energy, and one of the ideas would be to capitalize on this power source now. Although it raises serious safety issues, it is still a cleaner energy source than fossil fuels and may be used more extensively, while the country develops the production of solar, wind and bio energy production. To encourage energy production from these sources, tax breaks and/or subsidies could be offered to companies and residents. As for energy consumption, energy efficiency improvement programs need to be promoted vigorously, especially in residential and transport sectors (most buildings need better heat storing capacities and smarter heating systems for winter; many cars on the road are old and use much more fuel than newer cars).
