FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

Here is an image of the Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale. It is a combination of affordable housing projects, old Victorian homes, chic shopping and an overlooked homeless population. The highway below is an often-clogged main artery to the city. The highway separates the residential access to the waterfront park directly behind the camera and subsequently the grassy area pictured is a common tent village for the homeless, often cleared by the authorities. You can see the combination of affordable housing and large Victorian homes in the distance. These homes have been priced out of the means of the neighbourhood's residents and the affordable housing extends at high density outside of the image to the left and is often subject to rent strikes by tenants to slum landlords. The information that could be gathered from cities that have limited freeway access through tolls and increased transit could possibly help to re-open up some of this unused land to residents and encourage people to go to the waterfront park. Also information gathering could help to coordinate beautification and updates to the affordable housing projects, helping to cater to the financial and social needs of the community.
