FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2020-05-11 by Tuan Ky
This is a photo taken in downtown Chicago. The visible information in this photo includes the iconic Chicago theater on the left, indicating context. There are people dressed in warm clothings crossing a sunny street, lots of skyscrapers, a busy street with many cars and pedestrians on both sides of the road. There are some landscape on the sidewalks. A lot of clothing stores, groceries and visible venues of entertainment. The invisible information that can be extracted in this photo are the implication of high density as evident by the overwhelming built structures on both sides of the road. The variety of shops indicate places that attract crowds. Another observation is that there are no visible bike lanes in this photos. Although the city has an urban intervention called DIVVY bike (shared bikes), there have not been enough bike lanes provided to the users, making it unfamously unsafe to rike a bike around downtown Chicago. These two pieces of invisible information can be used to help inform urban designers and planners to plan/redevelop downtown streets for better walkability and safe bike riding for a large group of users, including people from overseas who might not be familiar with local traffic.
