In New York a lot of the apartment buildings that stand today were built in the early 1900s out of brick. The base materials for these buildings are clay, sand, and other aggregates. Today, many of these buildings also contain steel and cement for the structures, and within the building, many ther materials are used for the walls, floors, plumbing, electricity, and HVAC systems. A lot of the main materials like brick and steel are able to be manufactured in the US, but much of the sand and base materials must be imported. Additionally, many of the finished building materials are derived from materials and products found or manufactured across the globe. things like windows, appliance and electrical components.
