MODULE 8 - COMPULSORY EXERCISE: ECOSYSTEMS SERVICES Bonn / Germany a. Provisioning services - Food: Fishing in the river Rhine. The toxic pollution in comparison to former decades is down and the fish is edible again. That results in many hobby fishermen who gather at the riverbank. b. Regulating services - Moderation of extreme events: The floodplain on the eastern river bank of the Rhine is an area of land adjacent to the river and experiences flooding during periods of high discharge. c. Habitat or Supporting services - Habitats for species: Tannenbusch Dunes is a nature reserve located in the Tannenbusch section of Bonn. The nature reserve consists of inland dunes and measures 6.7ha. The dunes appeared after the last ice age, approximately 10.000 years ago. Because the region was still without any vegetation at that time, the sand was blown into this area from an old river bed of the Rhine. d. Cultural services - Recreation and mental and physical health: Rheinaue Leisure Park. Since its creation for the National Horticultural Show in 1979, the Recreation and Leisure Park has become a landmark of the City and a very popular recreational area. With its surface of 160 hectares - 125 hectares on the left bank of the Rhine and 35 hectares on the right - it nearly measures up to the size of downtown Bonn.
