In Buenos Aires, I can identify People, Land and Pollution as stocks and flows of the city. More than 3.5 million people (flow) enter the city every day, whereas only close to 2 million (stock) of those actually live in the city. This is a result of the centralization of work and services such as transport, health care, finances, etc. If the city was decentralized, and multiple sub centers functioned as a system, this flow could expand throughout the territory and solve the problems that happen nowadays, like traffic jams, collapse of the transport system, areas without service coverage, etc. Land appears to be a stable stock, but in fact, the waterfront of the city is man-made. The area known as "costanera" is land gained to the river (flow), and as years go by, the city continues to expand into the water. This could result in the reduction of this valuable resource, and irreparable damages to the ecosystem. Pollution and contamination in the cities present a global problem, as they continue to emit greenhouse gases, contaminate water resources, all of these resulting in flows that leave the city towards the ecosystem and the ozone layer, contributing to climate change.
