Spain, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2020-04-12 by VĂctor Quintana Ramos
My hometown is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, capital of the island of Gran Canaria (Spain). I will address stocks and flows taking in consideration the entire island as the system, being everything produced here and static as stock and everything that is exported/imported o that flies in or out, flows. Flows: 1. Tourism. Yearly, millions of tourists come and leave the island, generating a dynamic transit of people, jobs, and economy. 2. Raw Materials: there is barely no industry and no mining at all. WE need to import raw materials from the outside. 3. Recycling tons: Every waste recovered for recycling needs to be send away to mainland Spain to be properly treated. Stocks: 1.Agriculture: high nutrient and efficient soil provides fruit and vegetables enough for the population. 2.Fishing: completely surrounded by water, and being in the middle of the Canarian/saharian fish bank provides fisheries with enough supplies to avoid imports 3.Eolic energy My findings, during this covid-19 crisis is that every region should aim at producing and generating as many supplies as possible (energy, food, water, housing, raw materials, etc.) and by so, achieving minimising imports and carbon footprint. Always in a balanced and nature friendly way.
