The construction industry has always been dependent with the networks of material manufacturing across the globe. This is a photo a racking system for a logistics facility (a project of mine) in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. The main material was imported from Guangzhou, China. It a set of comprised of a prefabricated K-Bracing (for vertical support), and a pair of I-Beam with clawed-in bridging for horizontal support. What is even more interesting about the material is that is massively produced by a certain town in the city, in a very systematized way---some neighborhoods would work a certain part while another would work on assembling the components. It was like as if the entire city was acting as a manufacturing agent. Other components needed to build the racking system, while purchased on a nearby hardware store, also originated from other countries. Structural screws came from the US, tools come from several parts of Europe and the Americas, and plyboards from the Philippines. If you would look at it closely, you could really see how it is a reflection of a global economy producing advanced system to ease the construction process.
