SteveR Racine, WI Chicago Up to 21 degrees hotter in the city then in the nearby rural areas. Average 2.2 degrees city summers are cooler than in rural areas. 8 fewer days above 90 degrees each year than rural areas. Racine, WI does not have this data available, but we are approximately 1 hour north of Chicago. I will use them as my example. As you can see from the photo I attached, Racine has only one to two story buildings downtown with wide streets. The easy way to resolve the UHI would be to add more trees and awnings on the buildings. Bike and pedestrian paths would be nice with more hybrid vehicles. Chicago (AKA the Windy City) has high reflective buildings with long narrow streets. In the summer it is normally cool with the winds. In the winter it is freezing with the high winds, but the sun reflecting off the buildings makes it a little warmer. Either way, there is no shortage of people and activity year-round. There are shaded areas where people propagate during the day. Because my city does not use the UHI rating system, there are plans to change anything.
