FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

I recently took this photograph while I was waiting for the J train to arrive on the subway platform. After contemplating what I should submit for the assignment, I realized that I should stick with the most familiar thing, something that I am completely dependent on, for the rest of my days, and the source of general frustration when I do not make it within two minutes to catch the train on time. If you have not noticed by now the subway station in question is the Myrtle Ave. stop. The station is above ground and open to the elements. On the day that I took this photo it was raining and I realized the missing potential at each of the stations along the J line. Not only are the stations inaccessible to people who are handicap, except for the Myrtle Ave. station, they also remain inaccessible for people in full health. There is inadequate shelter for passengers from the rain and wasted spaces throughout the station, which could be reused to improve ease of access, or increase the commercial space. The invisible potential of this specific station was apparent to me before I realized that I was thinking of possibilities for such paces. Three important workstreams that could be focused on include the overall flow and design of the station to improve train traffic and commuter traffic as well. The fact that the station is above ground leaves the possibility of implementing clean energy sources to improve lighting at the station during nighttime and underneath the station and tracks. Employing the empty spaces could also grant the MTA the ability to manage the local Brooklyn system in an efficient way, which would improve the overall Transportation system that is available to residents of Bed-Stuy and Bushwick.
