In the attached photo, you can see downtown Vancouver, as well as the surrounding mountains (the rural environment). I was unable to upload more than one photo. In the photo, you can clearly see the tall and close together building of the downtown core. This area would serve as a heat trap for radiative effects of sunlight. Not in this photo is the surrounding urban residential area - many low-lying buildings on wide roads, that would also contribute to trapping heat. Outside of the urban environment, you can see forested mountains - a place well known for not getting too hot any time of the year. In order to help reduce the impact of the UHI effect, I would increase transit (to reduce car usage), mandate greenscaping for any new developments, and ensure that architects and engineers took into account the impact of the surrounding buildings when doing their planning. In Vancouver, the city is very concerned with climate change and reducing the impact of the city's actions on it. There are a lot of green spaces, open water sources, and treed lining streets to help combat the impact of the urban environment on the climate.
