I would first work on creating a toolkit (campaign resources, easy-to-understand guidelines, etc.) to be freely used as a base for citizen lead urban improvement projects (in this case focusing on improving safety in public spaces) within our jurisdiction. This aiming towards streamlining the project inception and implementation processes and facilitating resources to groups of citizens. I would then approach the concerned citizens by proposing the implementation of a pilot project in their neighborhood using the recently created toolkit. The contents of the project would be proposed by citizens with consultation from the local government. Since before and after metrics are essential for the pilot project’s evaluation, citizen participation in this area would be crucial. For example, citizen participation would be very valuable in mapping areas that are perceived as especially dangerous or lacking of proper illumination. The insights obtained during this proposed project could give valuable lessons for future efforts, and hopefully spark the interest of other citizens to improve their own neighborhoods.
