In Japan, especially in big metropolitan areas, a big factor that influences people in taking public transport to work is that it is common for companies to fully pay commuter expenses to employees if they use public transport (within a determined amount of money). This in addition to several other policies that make having a car more expensive than simply using the vast public transport network. I commute daily to work in central Tokyo from a suburb located within the greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area. In my case, due to the factors stated above, the option that I take for my daily commute is not only environmentally friendly, but economically it is also the one that makes more sense. The possible routes from my home to work are shown in the picture.
